What about the flaring ends? How can you do that?

I figure I can cast on the length of the scarf and knit a welt of 6
rows in reverse stockinette in a color, followed by 2 rows of
stockinette with short rows at the ends to flare them. Repeating the
welts across in fashion color (reverse stockinette) and brown/black
(stockinette)
As far as the yarn goes I think a laceweight mohair blend (original is
65 mohair 35 nylon) or similar slightly fuzzy yarn.
Does this sound like I'm on the right track for a pattern? Any
suggestions? Any ideas for what yarn to use?
