What is Art?

What is art? Does someone have to see your work to make it art? Will "good" art make you immortal? (Not in the Christian sense, just never forgotten)

I have so many questions with no real answers. I feel I am driven or inspired to make things but that doesn't make them art to all people. Or even a few people! If something someone has made inspires or excites me, it can stimulate me to create something from their idea.

dictionary.com says that art is or has:

the quality, production, expression, or realm, according to aesthetic principles, of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance. (My emphasis)

I think this implies a sort of skill or competence in whatever you make-even if it is a loaf of bread or a bar of soap. So then you need a state of mind involved where you attempt to make the best bread or soap or embroidery or knitted toy you can possibly make. We need inspiration which the American Heritage dictionary describes as:
in·spi·ra·tion (ĭn'spa-rā'shan) n.
Stimulation of the mind or emotions to a high level of feeling or activity.
Something, such as a sudden creative act or idea, that is inspired.
Divine guidance or influence exerted directly on the mind and soul of humankind.
The act of drawing in, especially the inhalation of air into the lungs.

I love the idea of breathing in the spirit of creativity-perhaps divinely originated. Makes it seem less haphazard when I decide to start a new project.

On that note, I have decided to knit a round lace shawl. Never have knit a round shawl as it has some problems with how to wear it to show the lace to the best advantage. If you fold it in half, you obscure the pattern. But this is a spiral shawl called Queen Anne's Lace and should look great with some of it folded down. The pattern is a free one from a group called MMarioKKnits .

You do have to join the group to get the pattern and many other free lace patterns designed by

Mmario Leo a Pola de Finale Emilia.

Ain't it a beauty? I am finding myself able to think in terms of pretty simple lace again so I was inspired to start this! I hope hasn't been too self-indulgent a post and that you will comment on my musings...

Art is a collaboration between God and the artist, and the less the artist does the better.
